Performance Management in the Public Sector

Summary:
An effective performance management system can be a critical component of any organization’s management strategy. Demonstrated success in achieving cost savings, increased efficiency and higher citizen satisfaction clearly demonstrates the system’s potential value. Any organization pursuing this type of system should begin with a thoughtful plan that allows time to complete the necessary reviews and assessments to build an effective system. Organizations must also consider the change management of implementing a performance management model. Performance management is not a “quick fix,” but rather, requires a substantial long-term commitment. Organizations should anticipate the need for efforts around managing this culture change, including targeted communications for stakeholders – both employees and citizens. The identification of quick wins resulting from the system will help ease this transition.
